Laboratory Intern
Duration: One Year Contract (Jan – Dec 2025)
The SAMRC Genomics Platform invites eligible candidates to apply for the 2025 Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) Intern Programme. This internship was established in 2023 in partnership with DIPLOMICS to provide technical training and capacity development for good laboratory practice (GLP), NGS and -workflow automation. Interns will be an active part of the SAMRC Genomics Platform laboratory team and will work on important projects that will build their skills and contribute to their development and employability. Responsibilities will include sample quality control, nucleic acid isolation, sequencing library preparation and administrative tasks related to the core functions of the facility.
Core Requirements:
• BSc or BTech In Molecular Biology, Genetics or similar qualification or higher
• 1 -2 years’ knowledge/experience in Molecular Biology or Genetics
• 1 -2 years’ knowledge/experience with basic molecular biology techniques e.g. RNA, DNA isolation, PCR and Gel Electrophoresis
• Knowledge of good laboratory practice (GLP)
Advantageous:
• Knowledge/experience in next generation sequencing (NGS) laboratory workflows
• Knowledge/experience with sample management
• Experience with DNA and RNA quality control
The following criteria apply to the selection of candidates:
• Not studying full-time/ classes must be after normal working hours.
• No formal work experience within the Molecular Biology/Genetics field.
